Pranayama is a branch of yoga which can be practiced separately, woven into an asana practice or used as a tool to transition into meditation. This workshop is designed for yoga students with a desire for deepening their practice. Breath is the most basic function of human life. Because the relationship between breath and life itself is so intimate our way of breathing has a profound effect on the quality of our lives.
In this series of workshops you will learn the yogic science of gaining mastery over prana (energy within the body) through yogic breathing techniques making breathing a more conscious process. 10 different breathing techniques will be presented as taught in the Kripalu tradition. Kumbaks (breath retentions) and Bandhas (energetic internal “locks”) will also be explored.
Swami Kripalu would say, “The deeper practices have to be chosen”. He viewed asana as a tool to strengthen the container (body) to hold the energy cultivated in pranayama. Higher energy within the body will lead to increased health and wellness, greater sensitivity, mindfulness, deeper meditative states and eventually dissolve the Ahankara (false self/ego).
We will begin each class with a warm up sequence of postures, discuss and practice a few pranayams, incorporate pranayams into asana, finally ending in savasana. Each workshop will build on the previous one.
This workshop is perfect for anyone who would enjoy a deeper connection to self!
“Practicing yoga postures with deep sensitivity to the breath is ten times more beneficial than postures done without breath awareness” S. Kripalu
